About the event
EMERGENCE South Africa: New Perspectives on Language and the Brain
The South African programme of the ERC Consolidator Grant EMERGENCE will launch at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg on 21–22 October 2026.
The launch will convene researchers, clinicians, students and international partners to explore how language is organised in the brain, how it varies across individuals and populations, and how this knowledge can inform clinical practice and future research.
The programme includes talks on speech-language assessment in South Africa, the ERC–NRF collaboration framework, clinical cases of aclickia, language-network mapping, clinical neuropsychology, the neurobiology of language, and the role of click sounds in language and brain research. The meeting will also include EMERGENCE project pitches and dedicated working sessions on recruitment, imaging, ethics, data governance and future collaboration.

22 October: Research-team working sessions and SASLHA CPD-accredited webinar
