This Collection has been assembled in memory of Professor Rudolf Nieuwenhuys (1927-2024), Emeritus Professor of Neuroanatomy and Comparative Neuroanatomy at the Catholic University, Nijmegen (Netherlands), and Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
Recapitulating Professor Nieuwenhuys’ long and variegated career, the Collection includes Commentaries from colleagues and co-Authors who knew him at different stages, from the beginnings to the last publication (2024), accepted and in press only days before his decease. The individual Commentaries thus serve as a window on the life of this distinguished neuroscientist as well as a fascinating tour guide through the contemporaneous scientific period. Many will know Professor Nieuwenhuys vicariously through his publications and especially the several magisterial volumes on The Central Nervous System of Vertebrates (1998), The Human Central Nervous System (2008), and Towards a New Neuromorphology (2016).
