Stephanie Forkel has joined the University of the Witwatersrand’s Department of Psychology as a Visiting Associate Professor. The appointment forms part of her ERC-funded EMERGENCE programme, an ambitious investigation into how language emerges from the dynamic interplay of brain anatomy, lived experience, and environment — including the extraordinary neural and cognitive demands of producing and understanding click languages.

Working with Professors Kate Cockcroft and Aline Ferreira-Correia and the NEURAL team, the collaboration will explore the remarkable linguistic and neurobiological diversity of Southern Africa, with a particular focus on click languages. It brings together complementary expertise and creates new opportunities for collaborative research, student training, and scientific exchange between Wits and Radboud University and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.
